We invite you to join us in honoring the life and legacy of the late Papa Tanyi Ake Francis, affectionately known as “Otong” to his community. Born in Kekpoti, Cameroon in 1945, Papa Tanyi was a devoted educator, businessman, and advocate for the intellectual development of his community. He was a man of peace and forgiveness, always striving for harmony even at his own expense.

Throughout his career, Papa Tanyi served as a headmaster in various Catholic schools in Cameroon, earning a reputation as a disciplinarian who was passionate about the education of the poor. He was also a successful entrepreneur, establishing drinking spots and businesses in different places in Tiko.

Papa Tanyi was a loving husband to his wife of fifty years, Angela Tanyi, and a proud father to six children and twenty grandchildren. He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to peace, his dedication to education, and his entrepreneurial spirit.

I still remember that morning that God called your name. It came like a surprise to us all. In life you were proud of us, and in death we are proud of you. We are heartbroken to lose you. But the truth is that you did not go alone; for part of us went with you the day the Lord called you home. Your left us peaceful memories, not a single day passes without me remembering you in my prayers since the day the Lord called you home. A big thank you to the values you instill in us. We will miss you papa. Rest well papa

My beloved father My beloved father, Chief Tanyi Ake Francis. It has been difficult for me to gather myself to write these few words. I want to thank you for being an exemplary father, teacher, and friend to me. You were a man of few words. You taught me good English and incessantly corrected me every time my tenses were not right. Your exemplary nature was enough for me. You taught me and practiced values such as: peace, love of family and friends, charity, forgiving and working with those who wrong you, patience, resilience, and faith. “We have to share,” was a common slogan on your lips. That is why you seldom ate alone, especially at Christmas and Easter even when mama would curiously asked, “why are you the only one to invite your friends to eat?”

My papa Tanyi Ake Francis. I write this tribute with a heavy heart. When I returned to Cameroon in 2022 after many years, you emotionally told me, “Boni, your coming has given me a new lease of life.” You were extremely happy to see me again. Papa I enjoyed all the time we spent together. I was happy being with you and taking care of you until you breathed your last in the hospital in my hands. If money could buy life, I would have spent the money for you to live. But God is not man. God knows best. I have learned a lot from you papa. You were so loving, especially in your last years. You changed mom’s name from mama Angela to mama Maria and she called you Joseph. I was always happy when you and mama referred to each other using the pet names...

We all as a family will forever be grateful for the time spent together with you. Finn remembers how fun it was helping you feed the pigs. You were such a peace-loving and good father, father-in-law, and grandfather. Your daughter, Lilian, is thanking you for always being there for her. Thank you for appearing in her dreams two days before you passed away. You will be greatly missed but we believe that the way you lived your life will help you find peace in the afterlife. You are forever in our hearts. God be with you until we meet again. Farewell on your journey to eternity. Rest in Peace.
